For-Profit Higher Education

The past few weeks have seen plenty of noise regarding for-profit higher education. It seems that at least a few of us are coming to understand that public money in the form of student loans and grants is at stake. Also at stake is U.S. competitiveness and the the integrity of a U.S. industry that is envy of the world: higher education.

Sadly, this issue will probably wash over into traditional higher education. I believe that in 10-20 years we will have state-level or federal-level (or both) certification of academic programs at all post-secondary institutions. I think certification of faculty will be part of that possible future. These efforts are well-intentioned but are also driven by a form of dangerous consumerism that tries to make education into a product like a hamburger or a form of infotainment.

A Very Busy Semester!

Funny how much the world has changed since my last post here. I continue to enjoy following Google's quest to compete with Apple Inc. (i.e. the Android versus the iphone). The NYT Online Technology section continues to chronicle the development of two "next big things": 1) the "Internet of Things" and 2) augmented reality. Of course cloud computing is getting significant "buzz."

I'm gearing up to teach a course on Google Inc this January and then it is back to Spring Semester. Over the holidays I intend to watch plenty of Turner Classic Movies and the MLB Channel. All of that and course preps.

Well that is about all of my drivel to share in this blog no one ever reads...LOL. But this is a journey not a destination. The experience of authoring this blog makes me appreciate bloggers who have weekly or even daily output.

Classic movie fans should check out the Movie Morlock at TCM.com. I am part of the TCM community and have even started a few threads of my own.

One of the courses I teach is "Business Problem Analysis." I get students started on skills at developing spreadsheets and graphics as well as database development. The idea of course is to get them to begin to see data so as decison makers they will be equipped to deal with the torrent of data innundating organizations.

This is a great tool that uses a bookmarking service to create books of links that are organized around any topic.

It is a free service. I have used it to create a book of links on IoT. This service allows you to collaborate in the development of a book and many other features. It has good functionality ands is easy to navigate and use.

I see this as an excellent way to mentor students who need to develop outlines for a paper and learn how to discern internet the value of electronic sources for citation.

See from his web site that his distribution deal with ABC will end by 3/31/2009. The best oldies from the 60s and 70s since the early 1980s every Saturday night from 6pm to midnight.

What a shame. Thanks to 93.3 KIOA Des Moines for many great evenings via Internet radio.

Let's hope Dick gets or finds a new deal. He is a national treasure. In the 80's his radio show was THE Saturday night party sound track. NO ONE gets the music of the 60s and 70s like him.

In class today my students and I explored the world of FCF (Free Cash Flow) models. It was fun to see them come to the realization that the HV i.e. TV (Horizon Value aka Terminal Value aka Continuing Value) is essentially based upon the Gordon Growth Model where value of equity = (expected dividend/price of stock) + estimated growth.

Since my flurry of blogs during the summer of 2008 I have had the "fun" of watching the financial meltdown. A perfect storm of lack of regulatory oversight, greed and the hubris of financial engineering.

The NY Times Online has a superb ongoing series and Charlie Rose on PBS continues to have exceptional interviews of key players and the best minds related to the process of recovery.

Cool tech things going on as well, especially Kindle 2.

This is one of my favorite sites. Every day I am amazed at the new products and services being developed. The ongoing story of Yahoo and its founder and Microsoft and Ichan etc will end up (I think) as a classic business case at HBS. I thank the NY Times for keeping me informed.

Yahoo grew at "only" 6% last quarter while Google grew at 39%. So called "analysts" (I think the syllable "anal" is the key idea here) contend that the difference in growth rates denotes a crisis at Yahoo. This is yet another example of absurd expectations - expectations rooted in no sense of reality.

When will the government - mainly the SEC - certify analysts (just like traders and brokers are licensed) if analysts can wield so much influence?

Sad, sad, sad. The only reason to tear it down is money. I think it is a tragedy. Certainly Yankee management will tell you they MUST have a new stadium but, this is a sports temple!

What a great movie. It has incredible special effects yet has a plot with twists and turns that keep you guessing. Will Smith has done it again, creating a sympathetic "everyman" movie persona ala classic movie stars.

The movie left me wondering, "How would I cope if I had superhuman powers?"

The movie has a feeling very much like "Superman Returns." It is a bit of a critique of our social angst that is anti-hero and a bit spoiled.
